Mr. Darcy is not the only person’s eye that Elizabeth catches. When Mr. Collins, Elizabeth’s cousin, pays a visit to the Bennetts in the Longbourn house, he announces that he intends to marry one of the Bennett girls. Since he is to inherit their father’s estate and fortune, he thinks it only right that he take the hand of one of Mr. Bennett's daughters as an act of goodwill. After visiting with the Bennetts for a few weeks, he decides to propose to Elizabeth. However, Mr. Collins is not an easy person to get along with. He’s polite to the point of being obnoxious, and he can’t make a single decision without running it through is patron, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. In essence, he’s annoying. However, he’s going to inherit their father’s fortune, so when he proposes to Elizabeth, the sensible (and expected) answer would be "yes." But because she can’t possibly accept his proposal and be happy, she says "no," which comes as a great surprise to Mr. Collins.
Unable to see how Elizabeth could possibly deny him, Mr. Collins assumes she’s flirting with him and says, “I am not now to learn … that it is usual with young ladies to reject the addresses of the man whom they secretly mean to accept, when he first applies for their favour,” (74). To which Elizabeth replies, “I do assure you that I am not one of those young ladies…” (74). This conversation goes back and forth several times, with Mr. Collins continuing to think that she’s flirting with him and Elizabeth continuing to repeat that she will NOT be marrying him.
Thus, for chapter 19, and this exchange in particular, I chose Meghan Trainor’s song, “No” because it mimics what Elizabeth is having to say to Mr. Collins. Trainor says, “My name is "No" My sign is "No" My number is "No" You need to let it go.” This song references a conversation she’s having with a guy who’s pursuing her, but isn’t getting the hint that she’s not interested, much like Mr. Collins with Elizabeth. Trainor also says, “If that boy ain’t giving up, Lick your lips and swing your hips, Girl all you gotta say is…. My name is “No” This also relates to Mr. Collins proposal to Elizabeth because he continues, even after he leaves her, to think that she’s going to change her mind and accept him. She repeats her rejection five times and he still leaves thinking she’s just toying with him. Talk about not getting the hint!
