After reading Mr. Darcy’s letter, Elizabeth goes through a period of realization with regards to what she thought was the truth and what she realizes is actually the truth. In essence, she “wakes up” from the sad story that Mr. Whickham has told her, and she begins to see people for who they really are. She at first doubts Mr. Darcy’s accounts of the story with Mr. Whickham, but then she thinks about Mr. Whickham’s behavior since meeting him. “She tried to recollect some instance of goodness, some distinguished trait of integrity or benevolence, that might rescue him from the attacks of Mr. Darcy, … But no such recollection befriended her,” (139). In her song, Perry sings, “How did I read the stars so wrong, I’m wide awake, And now it’s clear to me, That everything you see, Ain’t always what it seems, I'm wide awake, Yeah, I was dreaming for so long.” This reflects that very sentiments that Elizabeth expresses when she finally realizes her error in judgement of both Mr. Whickham and Mr. Darcy. “She grew absolutely ashamed of herself. - Of neither Darcy nor Whickham could she think, without feeling that she had been blind, partial, prejudiced, absurd,” (141). Perry mentions “But I’m not blind anymore, I’m wide awake,” meaning that she thought everything was one way, and realizes now she was wrong. In much the same way, Elizabeth is awakened by Mr. Darcy’s letter, and now can see how she was blinded by Mr. Whickham’s charm.
