After going through more trials and tribulations than any young couple should really have to endure, in chapter 58 Elizabeth and Mr. Dracy finally confess their love for each other while walking in the fields of Longbourn. They find themselves walking alone, each feeling completely awkward and uncomfortable because they don’t know how the other feels. Mr. Darcy has already been rejected by Elizabeth once, and Elizabeth’s actions (and that of her family) have caused her a great deal of shame. As they are walking, Austen writes “Now was the moment for her resolution to be executed, and, while her courage was high…” (246) which shows how anxious Elizabeth is feeling in this moment.
For this moment in chapter 58 I have chosen the song “Capsize” by Frenship, featuring Emily Warren. In the song, they sing, “Up at night I’m awake ‘cause it haunts me, That I never got to say what I wanted, Oh my God, oh my God, I’m not the same as I was with you.” This line describes what Elizabeth is feeling in this moment as she speaks with Mr. Darcy. Frenship goes on to say “And three words have/never come easy, ’Cause you’re more than they ever could be.” This is about the difficulty of saying “I love you.” Mr. Darcy seems to struggle with this in this moment, and finally he says to Elizabeth, “You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged,” (246). This shows why it is so hard for Mr. Darcy to communicate to Elizabeth that he loves her because she’s already denied him once. The song says, “If I never let it show, now I just wanna know.” This is what Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth are feeling in this moment in the story. They're both desperate to know if the other is in love or not.
