Elizabeth and Mr. Whickham have a very interesting relationship throughout the novel. When they first meet, she hears his side of the story in the conflict with Mr. Darcy and sympathizes entirely with him. His attractiveness and charm even cause her to have a bit of a crush on him. But, when Mr. Whickham turns his sights on a wealthier woman, she’s not overly upset and realizes that she never really loved him and that it was just a flirtation. Then she learns Mr. Darcy’s side of their conflict and realizes that Mr. Whickham has mislead her and everyone else in town, selling them all a sob story to get their pity and win himself a wealthy wife. However, Elizabeth decides against outing Mr. Whickham to the town because she thinks that he’ll be leaving with his army regiment soon.
Unfortunately for Elizabeth, her youngest sister Lydia decides to run off with Mr. Whickham, a scandalous thing to do without being married. This affects not only Lydia’s reputation, but the whole family is put to shame. Mr. Whickham is finally convinced to marry Lydia and after their betrothal he visits Longbourn (The Bennett home). He tries to play the charmer he once was and resume his flirtatious friendship with Elizabeth, but she sees him for what he truly is.
I chose the song “Bad Blood” by Taylor Swift because the song discusses two friends who have had a falling out and now there is bad blood between them. In the song Swift says, “You know we used to be mad love, So take a look what you’ve done, ‘Cause baby now we’ve got bad blood.” This essentially describes how Elizabeth feels about what Mr. Whickham has done in running off with Lydia and bringing disgrace to the family. Swift also says, “I was thinking you could be trusted.” This could refer to Mr. Whickham’s fooling Elizabeth and everyone else at first by making them think he was the victim of Mr. Darcy’s unkindness. In fact, Mr. Darcy was very kind to Mr. Whickham considering the circumstances. Once Elizabeth learns the truth, she realizes that Mr. Whickham can’t be trusted and she really never wants to see him again. Thus, for the latter half of chapter 52, I have chosen this song.
