The final song on the playlist is “Mirrors” by Justin Timberlake. This song has special significance to me because it was the song my husband and I danced to at our wedding. That being said, it also seems to perfectly portray what Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth feel at the end of the novel. Through all the near-misses, they finally find each other and are destined for happiness. In this song, Timberlake sings, “'Ooh I can't ever change without you, you reflect me, I love that about you.” Mr. Darcy tells Elizabeth, “What do I not owe you! You taught me a lesson, hard indeed at first, but most advantageous. By you, I was properly humbled,” (249). Thus, Mr. Darcy says it was Elizabeth who sparked a change in him and he appreciates this from her.
The song also captures the fact that Elizabeth and Darcy’s romance is not easily realized. Timberlake sings, “And I'll tell you, baby, it was easy, Coming back into you once I figured it out, You were right here all along.” This connects to the fact that Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth have many near-miss encounters in their courtship. First Mr. Darcy decides that Mr. Bingley needs to leave the countryside and so he leaves with Mr. Bingley. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth meet again when she’s visiting her friend Charlotte and he is visiting his aunt, but when he asks for Elizabeth’s hand in marriage, she refuses him. They meet a third time in Derbyshire when Elizabeth is on holiday with her aunt and uncle. She finally decides she might actually love him, and then Lydia runs off with Mr. Whickham, casting scandal over her and her entire family. At this point she thinks that all hope of a romance with Mr. Darcy is lost. Finally, at the end of the novel, Mr. Darcy comes back to Netherfield with Mr. Bingley, and he and Elizabeth are finally able to express their true feelings for each other.
